Assessment Team

Assessment Team, or A-Team for short, is a standardized research team of Cal Poly students from various majors who are trained to conduct physical health assessments both on campus and in the San Luis Obispo community. Students possess the skills and ability to test participants' height, weight, body mass index (BMI), BIA (a method of body composition analysis, such as muscle mass and body fat ratios), waist circumference and blood pressure.

More about A-Team

Since its founding in the winter of 2009, the A-Team program has been focused on making the FLASH study at STRIDE a success.

While they do not make any official medical diagnoses, the A-Team provides participants with convenient baseline assessments of their overall health and plenty of helpful resources. A-Team's primary objective is conducting the ongoing FLASH study on college student health, but also participates in community events on and off campus.

Evolving and Expanding

Since Winter 2010, the team has worked with Dayna Ravalin from the Public Health Department in order to create a more in-depth study which will examine lifestyle factors that could correlate with obesity in young children, in addition to examining the overall prevalence of obesity in San Luis Obispo County. This is also when the team started working with Roberta Alderete at Arroyo Grande Community Hospitals in their "Winter Fiesta" and "Day of the Child" health fairs, volunteering assessment services to under-served areas.

Initiated in the Fall of 2010, the FLASH study expanded it's scope to include a more comprehensive cardiovascular disease risk assessment, the Freshman Heart Health Study. A-Team now trains a select group of members to run all aspects of the Heart Health Lab. These Heart Health Technicians complete additional training to perform capillary blood collection and operate biochemical analysis equipment.

Beginning in Winter 2011, A-Team has also partnered with Jenna Miller at CAP-SLO to conduct assessments of high school students at Arroyo Grande High who participate in the afterschool "Boot camp" exercise and nutrition program. The education and interaction A-Team members provides to the high school students is fun and rewarding for everyone involved, A-Team and Bootcamp alike.
