Health Ambassadors

The Health Ambassadors program consists of Cal Poly students that are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of San Luis Obispo community members by fostering campus-community outreach and promoting the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors. These students, who are enrolled in KINE 471, senior projects, independent studies, internships, or volunteers, collaborate to develop a sustainable educational program targeted to all populations.

Health Ambassadors act as liaisons between college students and San Luis Obispo County. By creating and delivering presentations in local classrooms, health fairs, and community settings, Cal Poly students take a proactive approach in teaching various aspects of healthy living.

Current Activities

The Fall 2011 and Winter 2012 quarter have been great successes for STRIDE! The Health Ambassadors participated in 50 community outreach events across San Luis Obispo County and were able to interact with 1,000's of people; spanning different ethnicities, ages, and demographics. The students designed and presented health and nutrition related messages for health fairs, community groups, and cooking classes. These booths, lesson plans, and demonstrations contained interactive games and nutrition information to engage the audience as well as provide useful information. Cal Poly students utilized their critical thinking skills to assess each target population’s specific needs in order to meet specific, effective outreach goals.

In other news, students enrolled in the Health Ambassador class will now notice a new item on their transcript! This Fall 2011, KINE 471-02 was certified as a Service Learning Class through Student Life and Leadership. Now the time and hard work the students put into community outreach will be noted along with their grades on their transcripts; another way that STRIDE helps Cal Poly students in their professional goals and development as well-rounded students!
